A properly pruned tree has well spaced branches which let light and wind through. It has strong lower limbs that help keep the tree’s weight close to the ground. This helps prevent the wind from flipping the tree.
Often overlong, heavy branches need to be shortened to reduce the tree’s size, diminish wind resistance and enhance the tree’s shape.
Badly trimmed trees or over trimmed trees are very prone to severe rot. They grow out much thicker, and at least twice the normal speed, and require more frequent pruning.
